Our efforts with these experiments are with the intention of finding alternative roofing techniques for a resource center of an NGO in Alluva, near Gandhinagar, Gujarat. This NGO provides vocational training to women in villages around Alluva in fields like textile dyeing and weaving.
Keeping in mind the goals of the NGO and to provide a more holistic approach in our design, we decided to explore construction techniques that are sustainable- both environmentally and socially. We also aim to explore ways to make this knowledge commonly available so that it does not remain as something exotic or get lost in novelty. This technique is simple in terms of its use of materials and is skill-based; with some basic knowledge and practice, a mason can build his own roof! We want to make it common practice- a commodity that can replace RCC which has become the norm in rural housing even with small structures and simple plans.
